Affogato

Affogato means drowned: the cold ice cream is covered with a hot espresso in a glass or cup and served immediately. The contrast of hot and cold, bitter and sweet creates a special appeal as the ice cream slowly melts.

Vanilla or fior di latte ice cream is the classic choice. Variants add a dash of liqueur, cream or nuts. Because the espresso is not diluted, its aroma comes through clearly.
